A step-by-step guide to decorating your bedroom

When decorating a bedroom, you want to make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to do before you begin. This means sitting down and making a game plan before you start ripping your room apart. Let’s go over the steps you need to take before you begin and how to decorate a bedroom.

Game Plan:

Take pictures of your room from different angles because you will need them as a reference when you go to the store to purchase new décor. You will also want to measure the space above your bedframe, any walls on which you want to put pictures, and the window height for curtains. Put the measurements in your phone. Again, this will be for reference as you shop for what you want to get.

Gather all your new items before you decorate.

Whatever paint color you want to use, the accent feature you are trying to create, furniture you want to add, or DIY projects that need to be done- have all of this ready to go so that you can finish this bedroom makeover in a weekend and not over several months.

Take your measurements and photos to the store and start collecting your new pieces. Get your lumber and store it in the garage until you are ready to begin your makeover.

Another reason it is good to have a game plan is that you can actually budget for pieces. Sometimes, decorating a bedroom can cost anywhere from $300 to $2800. If you plan on spending more money on this renovation, you can save for a few months and then get all of your things at once.

After you have collected your items and are ready to decorate your bedroom, take these preliminary steps first.

This is what it looked like for two months as I collected pieces for a living room makeover I was doing for someone.

Step One:

Declutter your space. Go through the bedroom and get rid of any unwanted items, especially if you are changing your style. After you have gone through all the unwanted items and trashed or donated them, you can move on to step two.

This old bedroom set was the first thing to go in this bedroom makeover!

Step Two:

Clean your bedroom. Wash all the walls, light switches, ceiling fan, etc. Give your room a good cleaning so you can work in a space that isn’t overwhelming, dirty, or dusty.

Step Three:

You don’t want to trip on your things as you decorate, so we want to move as much furniture out of the room as possible. While I work on a room, I usually put everything in the hallway, closet, or attached bathroom.

Now, you are ready to begin decorating your new bedroom!!!

Start by painting and adding any feature walls, wallpaper, or decals you plan to use. Make sure you lay protective sheets over anything you don’t want to get paint on.

If you paint, you will want to make sure you don’t hang anything up or touch the walls with any furniture for at least 6 hours. Some painters recommend letting your walls dry overnight. You do what seems best for your personality, though. I am always in a rush to see the results, so I usually paint as early in the day as possible to start moving things back in by the evening.

While you wait for the paint to dry and the walls to cure, you can start assembling any new furniture or items you purchased that need assembly. You can also wash any new bedding or pillow coverings you bought.

You can start hanging pictures, shelves, or curtains up on walls that didn’t get any paint.

Assemble the bed and bring back any furniture or items sitting in the hallway while you were working.

If you are afraid the paint is still tacky, don’t push any furniture against the wall for at least one day.

But after a day or so of any paintwork, hang up any pictures, shelves, or whatever you bought to go over the bedframe!

Place all your little items on the nightstands and dresser, make your bed, and add any last-minute touches to your new room.  Take a step back and look at what you accomplished!!

Decorating a bedroom doesn’t have to be complicated when you follow the proper steps. With a game plan, it is much easier and less stressful. Even if you have little patience and want to move things along, collecting pieces over a few months will help curb that desire to see progress. Trust me, it is worth having all your pieces together so the decorating can happen over a weekend rather than dragging out the process because you didn’t have everything you needed. Many people either get overwhelmed and quit or their bedroom “refresh” takes weeks and weeks while living in a torn-up room/space.

Send me before and after pictures of your new space. I would love to see what you created!!
