A Simple, Modern Makeover for a Primary Bedroom

Getting permission to paint in a rental is sometimes difficult. Thankfully, we were able to get permission from the owner to update this primary bedroom. The dingy brown walls gave the bedroom a smoker vibe and made the walls look dirty. If you want a bright and airy feel, try painting your walls with a cool white. This will bring in a fresh, clean look.

For the crisp update, we opted for the color Simply White by Benjamin Moore. This color made all the difference for this gal. She grew up with smokers, and this bedroom had many things that reminded her of her childhood. After the painting was done, she felt a sense of calm and relief.

She knew she wanted an accent wall with a pop of color, and since this was just a rental, we went ahead with a cheap fix and painted a wall blue. We didn’t want to spend extra money by adding a paneled feature wall, and the paint worked out well in this space, as the accent wall was pretty large!

This blue is the same color as The Lounge Makeover, and she loved it, so we went with Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore. This blue looked gorgeous in her space. She had big bay windows that brought in a lot of natural light and paired with the color Simply White, so much light was bouncing off the walls.

This room was not only getting a fresh coat of paint on all the walls, but we also wanted to update her furniture. She had her furniture for over a decade and after many surgeries, she couldn’t quite climb into her tall bed like she could in previous years. So bye-bye, bedframe, nightstand, and dressers!

She only had one nightstand that went with the bed set. The other nightstand was one she found thrifting and painted black to match the other furniture. She managed with what she had for a long time, spending a lot of time in her room while she recovered from multiple surgeries; she knew it was time to bring some life back into her space.

Her style is pretty modern with a touch of farmhouse. We kept the chair she had in front of the bay windows but spruced it up by adding a little reading table, fresh curtains, and some color through different elements.

After removing her old dresser, she had a large wall that needed some attention. We decided to purchase three stylish units to enhance the space and add functionality. These units would not only fill the empty wall but also provide ample storage and showcase decorative items, creating the inspiring atmosphere she desired. Above the dressers, we added some beautiful frames with blue flowers that complemented her accent wall.

The final and most important part of the whole room was the bedframe! It was like Goldilocks and the Three Bears as we searched for something just right: nothing too high, nothing too low, nothing too bulky, but nothing that looked puny. We landed on a low-profile tufted farmhouse look to make getting in and out of bed easier. She wanted everything to be fresh and clean, so we went with white nightstands, cream lamps, and bedding that matched. The bench at the end of her bed is probably my favorite thing in the room! It brought in a rustic element that was absolutely gorgeous at the foot of their bed.

I enjoyed transforming this primary bedroom, and it provided my friend with the fresh start she was seeking. After the makeover, she felt more motivated to tackle her laundry and manage her home effectively. Sometimes, a refresh is all you need to ignite motivation for those household chores.
