Discover your passions with hobbies that are relevant to today’s world.

Hobbies! Everyone should have passions and activities they enjoy doing outside of binging their favorite Netflix show or gaming online with random strangers. Having skills in many activities can help you socially by making you more relatable. Having things to do with your time fills the void of feeling bored and lonely when you have to spend time alone. Although many modern hobbies are available today, the few I mention below aim to offer variety to suit anyone’s personality type.

Pickleball

The hobby everyone has been talking about for the last few years is pickleball! Of course, if you are competitive and a fitness enthusiast, you might have already gotten into this game as a hobby, but if you haven’t tried your hand at a few rounds, this game should go on the bucket list! Pickleball keeps you active and is a social sport you can do with friends and family. And, if competition doesn’t motivate you, you can always play casually.

Rollerskating

Do you remember putting on the skates you got for Christmas as a child and rolling around the sidewalks in your neighborhood? The wind is blowing past you, and you feel free and light. Last summer, I put on rollerskates as an adult, and I couldn’t believe I ever stopped! The exhilarating feeling of rolling down a hill brought back child-like faith, and I was hooked…again! If you haven’t put on a pair of skates in a while, I highly suggest wearing pads. I fell a couple of times, but I recovered quickly because of my knee pads.

Ingredient Girl

A modern way of saying “cooking from scratch.” It is crazy how our language has evolved, but cooking and baking with fresh ingredients is becoming an art again with the rise of frozen and pre-packaged food. While pre-packaged food has its conveniences, there is nothing like making fresh pasta, serving it to your family, and watching them enjoy it while also knowing how it nourishes their bodies.

Hand Lettering

Hand lettering is a hobby that will take up a lot of your time, making it perfect for winter months or rainy days. It is relatively easy to learn with resources for beginners, which you can get on Amazon. Thanks to modern technology, you can digitize hand-lettering phrases and quotes to sell them online for profit. This is a great option if you want a hobby that can turn into a side hustle.

Photography

Photography is a creative hobby that can take you from amateur to professional in months. If you are a storyteller and love to combine words and pictures, this activity will satisfy your desire to express yourself and your emotions in a powerful way. You can enter your photos into competitions, events, books, and films, or you can share your passion on social media to inspire people to find beauty in the world they live in. The photo above was taken in The Republic of Congo a few years ago. Every time I look back at my photos from this trip, I am reminded of the beautiful people I had the chance to meet, and I am inspired to continue working to help the Congolese people.

Adventure Planning

Adventure planning consists of arranging day trips or weekend trips close to home. Traveling long distances can take time to save up for, but planning day trips close to home doesn’t have to break the bank. Adventure planning allows you to schedule trips a few hours away and explore everything around you. You’ll be surprised by all there is to do within hours of your city! Staycations, or, as others call it, “micro traveling,” is a wonderful hobby that opens your mind to taking small risks while experiencing great rewards. Next thing you know, this hobby will land you on another continent.

Digital art and animation

If I haven’t said it yet, how cool are our digital advancements? There are numerous digital hobbies to explore today. You can create drawings and illustrations using tools like Photoshop, potentially turning your passion into income. Digital animation and 3D design products are popular among content creators who don’t have drawing skills. Whether you’re improving your abilities or starting fresh, you can become an expert with practice and dedication.

COntent Creation

Content creation is becoming increasingly popular today. Young people now aspire to be YouTubers instead of doctors or teachers! Social media has its pros and cons, but YOU have a unique story to tell because no one else in the world has your exact life or personality. When creating content for the right reasons, this hobby can be fun and exciting and bring you a community of people you never thought existed. Knowing your “why” is how you can use social media to your advantage and not allow it to consume you. I have enjoyed using TikTok and Instagram over the years as a hobby for making and editing videos! I learned how much I enjoy video editing through using these platforms. If this is a hobby you think you’ll enjoy, sit down and discover your “why” before you begin.

Health and Fitness

Health and fitness are more than a hobby; they are a lifestyle. However, some people enjoy certain aspects of health and fitness, such as macro counting, running, group challenges, and step tracking. Walking outdoors in your spare time is a wonderful hobby and habit you could start doing in your spare time. Fitness is often associated with a specific physique, but it can be viewed as a way to stay active and hold yourself accountable for your health goals. This perspective makes it more manageable for the average person who isn’t aiming to become a fitness enthusiast. Engage in daily activities during your free time that aligns with those goals. Doing this will help you discover specific interests and hobbies related to overall wellness.

Reading and Reviewing

One of my favorite hobbies is reading. However, when I come across a great book, I often feel the urge to share my thoughts with others. If you feel the same way, you can make reading even more exciting by writing reviews of the books you read! This way, you can share your insights and opinions with the world. You could share your reviews on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok or start a blog that reviews books.

Overall, everyone should have something to do in their spare time. I feel this way, especially for women in a season where they feel isolated. Having hobbies helps relieve depression and anxiety because you can focus on something other than your problems. I know this from experience and now have a plethora of hobbies to choose from if I ever feel bored. I hope you find new life in discovering your passions through exploring different hobbies.
